What is CIT?

WHY COMMUNITIES SHOULD HAVE A CIT PROGRAM

A CIT Program is important for communities to develop because it creates a safer, more coordinated, and more compassionate response to people experiencing behavioral health and/or IDD crises. By building strong partnerships between law enforcement, behavioral health and IDD providers, and community agencies, CIT ensures that crises are approached with de-escalation, understanding, and access to appropriate care— rather than unnecessary justice involvement. This collaborative model reduces injuries, builds public trust, improves outcomes for individuals and families, and ultimately helping communities build a crisis system that prioritizes safety, dignity, recovery, hope and shared responsibility.

988/SUICIDE & CRISIS LIFE LINE

988 is the nationwide, three-digit number for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, thoughts of suicide, or emotional distress—available 24/7 across the U.S.

Calls, texts, and chats connect directly to trained crisis counselors who provide immediate support, de-escalation, and help linking individuals to local services.

The Lifeline reduces reliance on law enforcement for behavioral health crises by offering a mental-health-first response.

988 supports individuals and their loved ones, offering guidance for how to help someone in crisis and access community resources.
